The Hekatontoros (Bireme)

1:24 · Ancient Greek warship, before the 6th century BC

The ancient Greek hekatontoros was a bireme: a galley with two levels of oars and 100 to 120 oarsmen. The Greeks devised and built them for war before the 6th century BC. They were about 24–32 m long and 3–3.3 m wide, twice the length and height of the earlier triaconters, galleys with thirty oars. Like all galleys, they had slender hulls and a shallow draught and were driven mainly by rowing.

About the model

Denis designed the Hekatontoros himself from historical research and scholarly estimates. The model has two oared levels with 100 oarsmen. It was shown on its own at the Zenon Education Centre in 2018 before joining the rest of the collection at Macleod College in 2019. Denis also donated a bireme to La Trobe University after his exhibition there.
