No. VI
The Harvey
1:50 · Baltimore clipper, built 1847

The Harvey was a two-masted clipper built in 1847 in Baltimore, Maryland. Like other Baltimore clippers, she was built for speed and with a fair wind could reach up to 22 knots. She was 26.1 m long and 7.9 m wide.
Baltimore clippers carried cargo, including enslaved people, and traded as far as West Africa. According to Denis’s research, the Harvey was later recommissioned under Abraham Lincoln’s administration during the American Civil War to fight the maritime slave trade.
American and Mediterranean clippers differed a great deal in design, but some features show a subtle link through the West Indies. Small Spanish warships built in Havana, Cuba, sailed as far as Chesapeake Bay. American builders adopted the type, reworked it, and it became a native American design.
