The Greek Galliot
1:65 · Greek privateer, 1821–1827

The galiot, also spelled galliot or galiote, was a sailing vessel that also carried oars. It was about 19.8 m long and 5.5 m wide, and the type was used in three different eras of naval history.
Mediterranean galliots, specifically the three-masted, oared Greek galliots, were used in the Greek War of Independence (1821–1832) against the Ottoman Empire. That war ended with the support of Russia, Britain, France and other European powers. Greek galliots took part in the Battle of Navarino on 20 October 1827, fought off the western coast of the Peloponnese at the place now called Pylos.
