The Shipyard
Mediterranean shipyard, 19th century
Shipyards build and repair boats and ships of every kind: freighters, cruise ships, fishing boats, research vessels and more. The words shipyard and dockyard are often used interchangeably, but strictly a shipyard builds vessels and a dockyard repairs and maintains them. Shipyards are found almost everywhere in the world, sized to the ships they build.
About the model
This diorama shows a nineteenth-century Mediterranean shipyard that builds small craft, mostly fishing boats, using skills handed down through generations. A wooden hull stands in frame on the slipway under a tiled workshop roof, with tools and timber laid out beside it and the shore and rocks beyond.
